Swolf (a combination of 'Swimming' and 'Golf') is the most popular metric for measuring swimming efficiency. It combines the number of strokes you take with the time it takes to swim one length. A lower score indicates better technique and more distance-per-stroke.
Swolf was popularized in the 1980s by swim coaches who realized that the most 'powerful' swimmers weren't always the fastest—the most efficient ones were.
To lower your Swolf, focus on your 'glide' phase. If you can keep your speed with one fewer stroke, your score will drop and your endurance will skyrocket.
