This assessment provides statistical probability and mathematical interpretation based on validated clinical equations. It is not a diagnostic tool.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a screening tool that uses a person's weight in pounds and height in inches to estimate body fatness. It is a simple, inexpensive, and non-invasive surrogate measure used in clinical settings.
Originally developed in the 1830s by Belgian statistician Adolphe Quetelet, BMI was refined as a clinical surrogate for body fatness by Ancel Keys in the 1970s. The 703 conversion factor was established to adapt the metric formula for US units.
For a more complete picture, pair your BMI with a waist circumference measurement. A high BMI with a small waist often indicates high muscle mass rather than high body fat.
