The 'Navy' method was developed by Hodgdon and Beckett in 1984 at the Naval Health Research Center. It was designed to provide a low-cost, reliable way for the military to assess body composition without expensive underwater weighing (the standard at the time).
Precision is everything for this tool. Use a non-stretch plastic tape and measure to the nearest 0.5cm. For the neck, measure just below the larynx (Adam's apple) for the most consistent baseline.
